In the original confrontation, Logan was able to defeat the bear with considerable ease, due to the poison in its system. Still, there are some big differences between these two fights as well. It's very clear, from the premise and from the presentation of Wolverine's internal monologue, that this recent fight is an homage to Wolverine's classic battle from decades ago. In both cases, Wolverine ends up hunting down the person who set the bear on the rampage, whether it was a careless hunter or a misguided young mutant. Additionally, in both fights, the bear is never the real enemy. The most obvious connection is Logan battling a massive bear, one which he didn't really want to hurt. There are some clear similarities between Wolverine's original battle and his more recent encounter with a grizzly bear. This iconic fight was even referenced in the 2013 film The Wolverine, cementing its place as one of Logan's most memorable battles. The trick, however, was that the bear had been wounded by a poison-coated arrow from a particularly careless hunter. Logan fought and killed the bear with considerable ease. This classic comic opened with Wolverine tracking down a grizzly bear that had been on a killing spree in the Canadian Rockies.
